Taiwan is best known for oolong tea, which grows in the high mountains and mountain valleys all throughout the central, mountainous regions in the center of the island.
Four seasons is a classic, everyday, no-nonsense oolong with a crisp taste, a sweet aftertaste, and a clean mouth feel.
"Clean and Fragrant Type Oolongs"
Four Seasons is a "Qing Xiang Xing" or "Clean and Fragrant Type" oolong. It releases a floral, fresh scent, and is a tea where the fragrance of the tea is one of the highlights of the whole experience.
Oolong teas are partially oxidized, which means they lie between "unoxidized" green teas and "fully oxidized" red teas. The middle ground is like a spectrum, and the Four Seasons and other Clean and Fragrant Type Oolongs are closer to the unoxidized side.
As such, this type of tea tends to have a lighter, "sweet water" flavor, matched with some green freshness similar to a green tea, but with still more depth of flavor than a green. The sweet aftertaste is a sign of good tea quality.
Jesse Says:
In January 2024, I went to Taiwan to scout teas for our oolong sampler. During that time, there were a few good teas that I sampled but didn't fit the sampler we were making.
Of those, the Four Seasons was a bit unique in that it is a popular tea fit for a broad taste that was in the price range that worked for the subscription box.
Now that we have our shipping situation in Taiwan figured out - which, as those that followed the first oolong sampler know, was not easy to do - we have the option of mixing in some Taiwanese teas into the subscription. I am sure you will like it!
