THIS SEASON'S BOX: Jesse’s Tea Club Box #14: Earth

After working our way through all 12 zodiac animals, our next subscription box series is based on “Ba Gua” - the mystical Chinese cosmology underlying the “Yin-Yang”!

Tea 1:

Duidui’s Bingdao Red Pu’er Tea

1 x 50g Tin (7-10 sessions)

What is a Red Pu’er?

Pu’er tea is the specialty of Yunnan China, where it is collected and aged like wine, and where each mountain’s specific balance of sweetness, astringency, and energizing “cha qi” tea energy is well known.

This tea is a raw (sheng) pu’er with a red tea fermentation step added. Normal raw pu’er is made by picking and withering the leaves, then rolling them and heat-fixing them in a wok, and allowing them to sun-dry.

This red pu’er combines traditional pu’er production techniques alongside an added red tea fermentation step. The result is a super bold, rich, energetic, sweet and malty tea that still boasts a gentle astringency and complex aftertaste.

Beyond the technique, the Bingdao tea region is considered one of the best tea regions in the world, and this tea is a chance to try a top-tier tea region’s tea in a small size.

This tea comes directly from my tea guy, Duidui, from his tea farm in the Dijie region of Bingdao. It’s a killer tea!!!

Tea #2: Mei Cha (Vine Tea)
1 x 50g Canister (12-18 sessions)

What is Mei Cha?

Mei Cha is drunk by the locals in Zhangjiajie, Hunan province - the amazing mountains where Avatar was filmed.

It is not a true “tea leaf” - it is a vine covered in a white frost of nutrients that dissolve in water, imbuing the brew with a unique taste. The more white frost, the better the Mei Cha.

Mei Cha has a grassy note mixed with surprisingly strong herbal flavor that wouldn’t be expected from a clean, clear, green-yellow liquid. But those more unique flavors are balanced by a floating honey sweetness both in the drink and the aftertaste.

It is light and smooth – a refreshing drink that is not heavy.

Mei Cha naturally has no caffeine, meaning it can be enjoyed even late at night or by people sensitive to caffeine.

Mei Cha + Water = So Sweet?!?!

Mei Cha has a surprising and unexpected superpower. The nutrients in the Mei Cha interact with the taste receptors on the tongue to “sweeten” normal water, giving an unexpected “sugar-water” taste to normal drinking water.

Drink some mei cha – a few sips is enough – and then drink some water. The water is now imbued with a clean, fresh sweetness that coats the whole mouth!

Take a look at the surprised reaction of Jesse and the team when trying the first Mei Cha samples in Changsha:

Tea #3:

Moonlight White Tea Chocolate Bar

1 x 60g Chocolate Bar (12 sessions)

What is Moonlight White Tea?

Moonlight White is made with Yunnan big-leaf white tea leaves. This tea explodes with floral scent, and releases a very clean and sweet flavor when brewed. As it progresses past the wash steep, it builds a strong body with herbal tasting notes. A cocoa/chocolate note is also present.

Unlike Fujianese white teas, which are separated into various grades by separating buds and leaves, Yunnan Moonlight White tea is made with both leaves and buds, lending scent from the buds and deeper flavor from the leaves.

The tea is called “Moonlight” because of the beautiful contrast between the darker leaf backs, which can sometimes look almost entirely black, and the pale white of the underside of the leaves.

Jesse Has Opinions About Chocolate Bar Teas:

After a lifetime of drinking pressed teas, I know what I like and what I don’t.

  1. I don’t like teas compressed so hard that you can’t break them off by hand if needed, and the leaves take forever to get soaked through and create an uneven steeping experience;

  2. I don’t like teas pressed so thick that you can’t break them with your hands, since “one serving” has almost no surface area to grab from above and below, and

  3. I also don’t like making people buy huge amounts, like 357g, or even 100g, to try teas.

This bar solves all three of those issues.

We experimented multiple times with our press, using different shapes and different pressures, ultimately landing on the current format:

Two beautiful 30g cakes;

Each pressed into six 5g sessions;

Just firm enough to hold together and soft enough to break easily.

We even custom-designed a special box to the shape and size of our new “chocolate bars.”

Originally we were going to do our normal 50g size, but we found out that without 30g in each chocolate bar, the bar was not able to hold its shape. As such I just decided to give you all a bit of extra tea 🙂

THIS SEASON'S TEA PET

Groundhog Tea Pet

“ALAN! ALAN!”

A voice calls from deep within the earth.

“Who’s there?” I ask, my eyes scanning the ground, wondering who – or what – might have made the noise.

The year is 2009. I am wandering the countryside in England. I am lost - both in the literal and figurative sense of the word. Reality weighs heavy upon me.

“ALAN!” It comes again.

“Who are you??” I cry.

“Oh, no, that’s Steve.” the voice says. “STEVE! STEVE!”

“I’m JESSE!” I wail.

It does not matter.

Postscript:

This is a groundhog tea pet - if you want a groundhog tea pet, I recommend this one.

He’s made of clay and has little fur markings all up and down his body. His mouth is perpetually open. He likes tea.

Size: (3.2*3.1*6.1cm/1.26*1.22*2.4 in)

What Are Tea Pets?

Tea pets are part of the Chinese Gongfu Tea tradition, going back 1000 years. They live on the tea table and bring luck and auspiciousness when water or tea is poured on them.

Tea pets are a way to personalize your tea sessions. Pick the animals you feel a connection to!

THIS SEASON'S TEA EQUIPMENT

“Three Gentleman” Bamboo Tea Scoop Set

For the Earth subscription box, we’ve decided to mix things up a bit and expand our “tea cup” subscription choice to include “tea equipment” by making this customized JTH “Three Gentlemen” tea scoop set.

Traditionally, various scoops, spoons, and tongs used for Gongfu Teamaking are referred to as the “Six Gentlemen.”

In this set, I’ve picked the three most important of the six, the ones I find I actually use. The set includes:

  1. A bamboo tea scoop, perfect for displaying your tea and sliding it cleanly into a teapot or gaiwan;

  2. A long spoon for drawing leaves out of a bag or canister onto the tea scoop, ending in a sharp point to serve as a pick for breaking up tea cakes or clumps,

  3. A pair of tongs, for grabbing cups and manipulating objects on the tea table (we also included a resting pillow for the tongs and needle, as a “tird-and-a-half gentleman).

All of these items come in a quality soft cloth travel pouch with the Jesse’s Teahouse teapot logo embroidered on the top, with a string-and-button closure.

Whether you use the items regularly, or just array them on the side of your tea setup to improve your tea-making environment, the set is made of quality materials and can be a partner to your tea-making for a long time.
