What is “Ice Jade Porcelain”?

“Ice Jade” is a type of porcelain created by an innovative new technique of firing high quality Dehua kaolin clay in a vacuum kiln.

The lack of oxygen during the high-temperature firing process creates changes to the porcelain on a chemical level, which lends it a few special characteristics:

• Ice Jade porcelain is extremely hard and tough, and feels almost like stone in the hand;
• The porcelain becomes semi-transparent, so light and even the tea color itself can be seen through the walls of the porcelain;
• The surface of the porcelain becomes glossy and shiny, like ice, or jade.
  
  

This innovative technique has only been around a bit over a year, which makes Ice Jade a new and desirable choice for people who love the clean white color of porcelain but are looking for something a bit more unique than normal tea equipment.

Hand-written Calligraphy: Jesse Explains

When I first saw these ice jade pots in Dehua, I asked our porcelain guy Alex if we might be able to hire calligraphers to write on the pots and cups.

I felt that the ice jade itself was beautiful, and I wanted to keep the material itself as the star of the show, but still add a Jesse’s Teahouse special touch to the item.

After some discussion with the whole tea team, we decided to go with one of our new core value statements, which came out of a brainstorming session while the whole tea team was on Sister Ai’s mountain:
