THIS SEASON'S BOX: Jesse’s Tea Club Box #12: Ox

Is it an Ox? Is it a cow? Whatever it is, it’s big and it’s here!!!

This sub box we’re giving you EIGHT! Teas - seven in our Sister Ai’s Mini-Tong Sampler, and also a new light roast oolong from Taiwan!

Teas #1-7: Sister Ai’s Qi Zi Bing “Seven Cakes” Mini-Tong Sampler
1 x 50g tong + 4 extra coins (11 sessions)

Isn’t it a thing of beauty???

A year’s worth of work went into this hand-wrapped masterpiece of tea culture! Inside each tong are seven tea coins, a “best of Sister Ai’s Mountain” sampler that can fit in your hand.

The Teas:

Each tong contains 1 coin of:

Sister Ai’s Black Beauty: Explosively fruity, juicy, and created by a novel production technique combining aspects of pu’er, red tea, and white tea production.

Thousand-Year Tree Wild Red Tea: Top-grade leaves from wild tea trees 1000 years old, harvested from a nature reserve in the mountains of Qianjiazhai.

Sister Ai’s Everyday Shou Pu’er: Rich, earthy, and easy drinking, this tea is as dark as coffee and has the classic funk of a post-fermented “cooked” pu’er.

Sister Ai’s Everyday Ancient Tree White Tea: Sweet, clean, fresh, this white tea is a great introduction to Yunnan whites.

Sister Ai’s Everyday Ancient Tree Sheng Pu’er: The classic energizing raw pu’er from Sister Ai, with notes of lemon citrus, innervating tannins, and classic floral scent.

Sister Ai’s Everyday Golden Pu’er: Lighter, sweeter, and with less tannins than normal raw pu’er, this is a great tea for people who want pep and energy but may dislike the intensity of normal raw pu’er.

Sister Ai’s Everyday Ancient Tree Red Tea: Super classic “black tea” flavor that will blow your Earl Greys and English Breakfasts out of the water.

We are also including a small bag with 4 extra coins of each of the types that have previously never been featured on the shop: The Black Beauty and Everyday White, Shou, and Golden Cake.

The “Tong”:

The “tong” is the traditional way Pu’er tea cakes were sold in the ancient days of the Tea Horse Road trading route. They are made from dried bamboo leaves, each of them hand-wrapped and hand-tied by Sister Ai’s team in Yunnan.

Sister Ai’s “Qi Zi Bing” Seven Cake Series

All seven of these teas are available in 50g cakes, so you can pick your favorites and get more of only the ones you like the most!

Like them all? Get a full tong - 7 x 50g cakes! It’s a tea collection in a tong!

Jesse Says:

Our first ever collab with Sister Ai was on her Master Box, and while I loved that product, I didn’t like that it meant people had to drop over a hundred dollars to try several types of tea from her mountain.

These mini-tongs are my solution to making this truly excellent tea accessible, and in a way that is both engaging and traditional! I hope our subscribers appreciate the energy that we put into making such a unique item.

For subscribers, to make sure you get as much tea as possible, I’m even including an extra bag of four tea coins so you can have multiple sessions of the newest teas.

Drink them one at a time, or have a many-tea sampling party with friends! The tong is yours!

Tea #8: Taiwanese Golden Pearl Oolong (Light Roast)
1 x 75g tin (10-15 Sessions)

Taiwan is best known for oolong tea, which grows in the high mountains and mountain valleys all throughout the central, mountainous regions in the center of the island.

This light roast golden pearl oolong is made just for Jesse’s Teahouse, based on customer feedback on how people have liked our clean and fragrant oolongs, as well as our roasted Dongding oolong.

 THE TEA

This tea is made with Golden Pearl oolong leaves, a new experimental varietal of Taiwanese oolongs, developed independently by our tea farmer partner in Taiwan. The flavor is clean and fragrant, but with caramel and roasty, nutty notes that come out during the roast process.

This tea is roasted three times, each over low heat, and with several days’ rest time between batches. This reduces the burned notes that can accompany tea that is dried too fast, and also means the leaves recover from the heat and have a nice, plump, full presentation.

The result is a nice combination of easy-drinking, fragrant oolong that has just a pinch of the smoky, roasty flavor that will appeal to tea fans and coffee lovers alike.

Taiwanese Tea Mountain Heaven

What are "Clean and Fragrant Type Oolongs"?

Golden Pearl is a "Qing Xiang Xing" or "Clean and Fragrant Type" oolong. It releases a floral, fresh scent, and is a tea where the fragrance of the tea is one of the highlights of the whole experience.

Oolong teas are partially oxidized, which means they lie between "unoxidized" green teas and "fully oxidized" red teas. This tea is closer to the unoxidized side, though it has deeper flavor notes from the roasting process.

As such, this type of tea tends to have a lighter, "sweet water" flavor, matched with some green freshness similar to a green tea, but with still more depth of flavor than a green. The sweet aftertaste is a sign of good tea quality.

Jesse Says:

During the first salvo of the most recent trade war, I reached out to our Taiwanese tea team to see what options we might have if the worst happened and we were cut off completely from Chinese teas.

I didn’t want to HAVE to buy Taiwanese tea because of trade issues, and it was important that if we expanded our Taiwanese tea line, it had to be because we found really good teas, and also teas that stand out from the rest of our existing Taiwanese selections.

Jayme, our third-gen tea gal in Taiwan, reached out to her family to see what innovations are going on in Taiwan and identified this Golden Pearl varietal as being a good candidate. We bought the tea during the spring harvest, and vacuum sealed it to keep it fresh, and since the chaos of the trade war left us with no slot in our August tea box, this one got bumped to November.

I am very excited to be able to share it with you all!

OUR TEA PEOPLE

We will be working directly with Jayme and Uncle Liu, a third-generation tea family with farms in Dong Ding and Qilai Mountain!

Jayme and I at her family's tea farm on Dong Ding Shan. Jayme's family's teas are featured in Michelin Star restaurants across Europe.

P.S it comes with a Bag Sealer :D

THIS SEASON'S TEA PET

Ox Tea Pet
(Collaboration with Tea Pet Competition Winner: Melanie Luchtenveld)

The winner of our Tea Pet Competition!

OUR WINNER: Melanie’s Ox!

All tea pets crave tea, and this super cute Ox is always looking up, waiting for his next teatime!

This tea pet was designed by Melanie Luchtenveld, who is the winner of our tea pet competition. We sent the original to China, where our team designed a mold that we used to make the version on our shop.

This earned her the top prize: $200 cash, 20 tea pets, an Ox tea cup, and a portion of all sales of items with her work on them.

What Are Tea Pets?

Tea pets are part of the Chinese Gongfu Tea tradition, going back 1000 years. They live on the tea table and bring luck and auspiciousness when water or tea is poured on them.

Tea pets are a way to personalize your tea sessions. Pick the animals you feel a connection to!

THIS SEASON'S TEA CUP

Ox Tea Cup

HE TWISTY

JESSE SAYS: I hired an artist in China to paint this Ox for us in traditional Chinese painting style. My art direction?

“Make him thicc. Make him derpy.”

CALLIGRAPHY AND PUNS

We hired a calligrapher to hand-write the phrase “牛转乾坤” Níu Zhuǎn Qián Kūn, a phrase that means, “To turn things around.”

The original “Chengyu” phrase is 扭转乾坤 - the first character 扭 Níu (To twist) has been replaced by 牛 Níu (Ox) so we can play both a linguistic and visual pun with our twisting Ox art.

After a chaotic 2025, I personally have been hoping that many things turn around, and while drinking from an ox cup with a pun on it might not be enough to turn things around by itself, it also totally might be enough to turn things around by itself.

With a capacity of 80 ml, this Ox cup is a fantastic addition to our zodiac series and closes out the series in style.
