THIS SEASON'S BOX: Jesse’s Tea Club Box #15: Thunder

After working our way through all 12 zodiac animals, our new subscription box series is based on “Ba Gua” - the mystical Chinese cosmology underlying the “Yin-Yang”!

Tea #1

Guizhou Province Regional Tea Sampler
(Total 100g, 20 x 5g sessions)

The Sampler
Single-sourced teas directly from a forest preserve, it’s Guizhou province in a teacup!

This sampler features 20 individual packs of four different loose-leaf teas, direct from Cha Shou Shan (Tea Longevity Mountain) in Fenggang County, Guizhou.

The sampler contains:

Red Pearl Red Tea (7x 5g sachets)
Sweet, honey notes float above all else in this easy-drinking, super crisp everyday tea.

Jade Pearl Green Tea (7x 5g sachets)
Gorgeous spring green tea made from the same leaves as the red pearl, it is crisp, grassy, and umami with a rich jade tea color and smooth mouthfeel.

Red Peony Premium Red Tea (4x 5g sachets)
It’s a floral bomb! The tea’s personality is found in its lovely, rich floral scent, sweet taste, and smooth mouth feel. This fragrant tea varietal is a distinct experience.

Mao Hongyi’s Gold Medal Red Tea (2x 5g sachets)

Mao Hongyi is the master tea processor for all the teas in our sampler and this is his prize-winning red tea, named best red tea in Fenggang County.

Bud-only, hand-picked tea leaves are graded and selected by Mao Laoshi. These leaves are fermented and heat-treated to perfection, balancing honey sweetness, fragrance, and malty richness. It’s got another gear to it!

Tea #2:

Red Peony Premium Red Tea Box

50 g (10x 5g sachets)

See, I loved different things about each of the teas in the Guizhou Box. This Red Peony however just caught me from the beginning when I first drank it on Tea Longevity Mountain, as we overlooked the tea hills where it was picked. The whole Jesse’s Teahouse team was struck by the first scent coming out of the gaiwan, and we knew we wanted to get it into the shop.

Then when planning the Thunder Box we knew we wanted to give people the diversity of the Guizhou Sampler, but also felt like people may miss having a larger portion of a good tea to really sink into (or be able to experiment with, looking at my cold brew lovers). We then thought that this tea would be the perfect fit, and we hope you do as well!

This scent that started our love for this tea is achieved through a combination of natural terroir and the skill of Master tea processor Mao Hongyi’s experience – controlling the time of the kneading, fermentation, and roasting steps so as to slowly bring out the tea’s natural scent. No artificial oils are used.

Jesse and Team Sourcing tea in Guizhou

About Guizhou Province & The Tea

Guizhou is one of the most geographically isolated parts of China, as its high mountains and winding valleys make travel beautiful, but difficult.

Guizhou is famous for Maotai liquor, China’s most esteemed Baijiu (rice liquor). The spirit is distilled in Guizhou because of the pristine sources of pure water, unpolluted by industry or large population centers. This same water makes Guizhou’s agricultural products – including tea! – famous all around China.

Cha Shou Shan (Tea Longevity Mountain): A Tea Mountain Time Machine

Cha Shou Shan (Tea Longevity Mountain) is located in an isolated corner of Fenggang Country, Guizhou. The terrain and lack of roads meant that in the 1990s, our tea farmer partners were able to preserve an enormous swath of land deep in the forest. They planted tea trees and traditional Chinese medicines, and let them grow without pesticide or pollution, working with local villagers to harvest the leaves once per year in the spring.

The result is a “tea mountain time machine” - the land is even accredited as meeting the Rainforest Alliance’s Sustainable Agricultural Standard. This title is only given if the state of the land is tested scientifically and believed to be as pristine and biodiverse as it would have been 100 years ago.

Three years ago, a new highway opened up connecting Cha Shou Shan (Tea Longevity Mountain) to Zunyi, cutting travel time to the closest regional airport from nine hours to three hours. In the past few years since the highway opened, our tea farmer partners have built infrastructure to connect the tea farms to the rest of the country and the world!

We have the honor of being the first Western tea company to share these teas - enjoy a sip of the amazing nature!

THIS SEASON'S TEA PET

Gu Qin Frog Tea Pet

Peace and calm can come in many forms – including the form of a frog playing the gu qin.

The gu qin is a seven-stringed zither instrument, and its resounding notes make it a perfect match for our Thunder Box. It was already popular two millennia ago during the time of Confucius, and playing the gu qin is considered one of the “Four Arts” all scholars should know, alongside calligraphy, painting, and strategy games.

The frog is a frog. This one’s calm.

Alongside its larger cousin, the gu zheng, the gu qin is often played during teatime, making it a perfect instrument for a frog to play on your tea table. He also doubles as an incense holder, which goes perfectly with our new Incense Line!

What Are Tea Pets?

Tea pets are part of the Chinese Gongfu Tea tradition, going back 1000 years. They live on the tea table and bring luck and auspiciousness when water or tea is poured on them.

Tea pets are a way to personalize your tea sessions. Pick the animals you feel a connection to!

THIS SEASON'S TEA ACCESSORY

Miao-Style Embroidered Tea Mat

The Miao people are an ethnic group who live throughout Guizhou province, and we couldn’t think of anything better to pair with our new Guizhou series of teas than some of their famous embroidery patterns!

This tea mat is made of two layers: the front piece is colorfully embroidered with traditional Miao patterns which is then sewn to a second backing cloth made of heavy cotton fabric. The result is a beautiful but surprisingly sturdy tea mat, for displaying cups, tea pots, or anything else!
