What is Red Tea?
What we call "Black Tea" in the West, Chinese call "Red Tea" (Hong Cha 红茶.)
Red teas are dark in color, with deep flavor matched by natural sweetness.
To respect Chinese tea tradition, I use the Chinese description of "Red Tea", but no matter the name, if you have had black tea before, the taste will be familiar to you, as it is the base tea of many western blends.
THE TEA
Lapsang Souchong, also known as Zhengshan Xiaozhong, is a smoky red tea with intense flavor.
Smoked over pinewood, this tea has an intense aroma and distinctive fragrance. The flavor is bold and powerful, and the small leaves steep quickly, releasing lots of flavor even at very short steep times.
JESSE'S REVIEW
Over the last year or so, I've had lots of people on social media ask for Lapsang Souchong. I'm glad to have found one that is smoky but not bitter - sometimes the teamakers can go overboard in making this tea since its roasted, smoky flavor is the main selling point.
This is a great tea for people familiar with Western-style "black tea" that want to up the complexity of their tea experience. And while I always recommend making tea without mixing in milk or sugar, if you were to try some at-home boba tea, this could be a good candidate for a tea that will stand up to other heavy flavors.
