THE TEA

This is a gorgeous Taiwanese red tea from Sun Moon Lake, known for producing some of the most fragrant teas in all of Taiwan.

Flavor Profile:

Rich, Sweet, with a mellow character and a cool finish with a hint of mint.

In Chinese, the words Hong Yu (Red Jade) literally translate to “Ruby.” But since in America at least “Ruby Red” means grapefruit juice and not tea, I decided to stick with a literal translation - which personally I think sounds even better.

What is Red Tea?

What we call "Black Tea" in the West, Chinese call "Red Tea" (Hong Cha 红茶.)

To respect Chinese tea tradition, I use the Chinese description of "Red Tea", but no matter the name, if you have had black tea before, the taste will be familiar to you!

Keep your tea fresh! I include a free nifty bag-closer with every order.

Jesse’s Review:

This tea has been a bit of a secret pleasure of mine - I got it as a sample along with my other Taiwanese teas and have drunk it many times on my channel despite the fact I didn’t have it in the shop.

This tea has such an amazing fragrance that I always look forward even to the wash steep. This tea is great for traditional Gongfu-style making because you can smell the fragrance on the lid of the lidded cup, as well as the pitcher and the cups.

Sun Moon Lake is famous for its red teas. It's a great chance to try a tea from a top region!

I finally managed to bargain down the price to a point that I feel is accessible and a great deal for this quality of red tea!

VALUE AND QUALITY

These teas are high quality and can be re-steeped multiple times! Each serving makes between 3-6 big mugs of tea, so at around $.50 a cup, you get top quality Chinese teas at a price that you can enjoy every day.

Jesse's Teahouse started because when Jesse lived in Beijing, he realized the quality and value of the tea directly from the Beijing Tea Market was so much higher than what could be easily found in the States -- and around the world.

Jesse contacted his tea friends, they shipped their best teas to him, and he sends them to you. That's it!

NOT JUST TEA, TEA CULTURE

Jesse believes the key to making good tea is to help his Chinese tea friends share not just their best teas, but also their advice on how best make the teas.

That's why each box comes also comes with an info card that tells you:

  • Tea Origin
  • Steep Temperature
  • Steep Time
  • Directions for both teapot steeping and gaiwan steeping

There are also links to tea-making videos on QR codes on the back of the info card included in the tea box.
